Women's Soccer Wins Second Straight In Impressive Fashion

The Xavier University women's soccer team won its second straight match with a 5-0 win over visiting Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at the Xavier University Soccer Complex. Juniors Melissa Zimmerman and Maggie O'Neal led the way with a pair of goals each, while sophomore Brittany Green and freshman Carlyanne Wenzel each contributed a pair of assists.

 


 

 

Xavier, which won 2-1 at George Washington on Friday, is now 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 and 3-8 overall, while Saint Joseph's is 0-2 in the A-10 and 2-8 overall.

 

The Musketeers had the first half's only score at 34:38 as freshman Lizzy Gerard drilled a shot from 15 yards out to record her first collegiate goal. Green and Wenzel earned assists in setting up the scoring play. XU led 1-0 at halftime.

 

Xavier wasted little time in the second half putting up an insurance goal as Zimmerman scored the first of her two goals at 46:31. Wenzel earned her second assist of the day on the play.

 

The Musketeers added a third goal at 62:31 when Zimmerman found the back of the net again off an assist from Green, her second of the afternoon.

 

Xavier added two more goals late in the match, both of which came from O'Neal. The first one came on a header at 79:20 off a pass from freshman Kaitlyn McGoldrick. The second one came just 23 seconds later at 79:43 off a pass and assist from freshman Marybeth Monaghan.

 

 

Sophomore Kelly Farrell and freshman Jenny Rosen combined for five saves in the shutout win. Farrell played nearly 73 minutes of action in earning credit for the victory.

 

Xavier continues its three-match homestand next weekend with matches against Rhode Island on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Massachusetts next Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
