Women's Golf Storms Back on Final Day of XU Invitational
Oct. 14, 2007 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The final round of the LPGA International Xavier Invitational was the Musketeers' time to shine as the Xavier women's golf team bounced back from their second round to shoot the fourth best final-round total, a 13-over par 301. On another beautiful day, the impressive final charge was led by senior Diana Torry, who fired the second best round of the morning with an even-par 72. Torry did not know the full magnitude of her accomplishment until she totaled her score at the end of the round and met with a thrilled coach Tom Elfers. The round helped her climb from a tie at 34th to T-19th overall. Torry tied with teammate Mary Beth McKenna in 19th place at 230 (+14), a jump from her T-28th place standing after day one. McKenna carded a 74 in her final round, regaining top form after a difficult second round. The Musketeers knocked 20 strokes off their total from the day before, jumping from 11th to ninth in the overall standings (935, +71). Xavier's surge overtook Western Michigan (937, +73) by two strokes and Freshman Audrey Fellmeth rocketed up the board from T-54th to 41st after shaving eight strokes off her second round total. At 23-over par (239), Fellmeth finished a swing ahead of fellow freshman Rachel Levi, who carded a final round of 82 (+10). Junior Lindsay Cornell improved her second round score by four strokes to finish in a tie for 51st place at 243 (+27). Sophomore Lindsay Steiner led all Xavier individuals with a 262 for the tournament (+46), earning her 77th place. Junior Colette Ryan was one place back, finishing at 274 (+58). Unfortunately, senior Erin Gore had to withdraw due to a back injury. The team thanks all parents and relatives that came to support them during the tournament, as well as those unable to attend the event. Xavier women's golf will return to competition after a week of rest. The Ross Resorts Invitational in |
