Eric Toth enters his first season as head coach of the Xavier University men's and women's tennis teams after serving the last ten years as an assistant coach. "I am very grateful for the opportunity Mike Bobinski, Mike Dunn and the rest of the Xavier Athletic Department has given me in taking over as the head coach for both the men's and women's teams," said Toth. "I am excited for the 2007-08 season as I believe both teams will have successful campaigns." Toth replaces legendary Xavier coach Jim Brockhoff who retired shortly prior to the 2007-08 season after 45 years at the helm of the men's program and 34 seasons leading the women. "I am most grateful for the opportunity coach Brockhoff presented me 11 years ago when he named me his assistant coach," commented Toth. "What I learned most from coach Brockhoff was how to direct a Division I program in the proper manner through recruiting bright kids and good athletes who are not only going to succeed while at Xavier but for many years following their academic career. His track record speaks for itself. It seems daunting at times to follow a coach who has had as much success as coach Brockhoff but I am confident in my ability to lead both programs in a way I know the university and the Xavier community will be proud." Both the men's and women's teams are coming off successful season in 2007. The men's team returns five singles and five doubles starters from last year's squad that went 15-10 and was a third set tiebreaker away from its first-ever Atlantic 10 team title. For the women, Toth returns four singles and four doubles starters from last year's team that went 16-8. With the addition of five newcomers to the squad, the Musketeers should improve upon the team's sixth place A-10 Tournament finish. Toth attended the University of Cincinnati and was a two-year co-captain on the men's tennis team there as well as the team MVP for the 1991 and '92 seasons. He excelled on the doubles court, earning ITA Region IV final rankings of sixth in 1993 and 12th in 1992. Toth ranks in the top ten in all-time victories at UC. Upon exhausting his eligibility, Toth served as the team's volunteer assistant coach during the 1994 season while completing his degree in secondary education. Toth was a top-ranked junior in the greater Cincinnati area and played his high school tennis at Elder High School. He was a four-year varsity starter at Elder and was a runner-up in the 1988 3A State Doubles Tournament. Outside of his work with the Musketeer tennis programs, Toth remains visible throughout the tennis community as a teaching professional and volunteer. He serves as the Director of Tennis at the Ridge Club and is a staff professional at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. Additionally, Toth assumes many volunteer responsibilities throughout the area and currently serves as the secretary of the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Association. He is also a member of the USPTA, the largest organization of tennis teaching professionals. |
