Men's Soccer Concludes Season With 1-0 Win Over St. Bonaventure

Nov. 11, 2007

Box Score

CINCINNATI - Freshman James Getzen scored a first-half goal and the Musketeer defense made it hold up as the Xavier University men's soccer team defeated St. Bonaventure, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the 2007 season finale at the XU Soccer Complex.  With the win, Xavier completes its season with an 8-10-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in Atlantic 10 play.  The Bonnies conclude the year at 6-7-3, 3-4-2.

The Musketeers finished the season one point shy of qualifying for their second-straight Atlantic 10 Championship.  Fordham scored an overtime goal at Richmond to lock up the final berth in next week's conference championship.

Today's match was delayed on two separate occasions due to lightning in the area.

Getzen's game-winner came at 21:50.  Sophomore Slav Ubiparipovic controlled the ball just outside of SBU's box and dished to senior Chris Miliano.  Miliano then dished-off to Getzen on the near side and he drilled a groundball past a diving David Flynn just inside the far post to put the Musketeers up for good.

Sophomore defender Jake Vollmer made a big defensive save off of a shot by SBU's Jon Lopez just minutes later to preserve the lead.

The Musketeers out-shot the Bonnies by an 18-to-16 margin and held a 10-to-7 edge in shots on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Adam Sokolowski made four first-half saves before he was removed in favor of senior keeper Dale Parsons.  Parsons was solid as he made two saves to preserve the senior-day victory.
