Box Score

CINCINNATI - The Xavier baseball team used 10 hits to knock in seven runs in a 7-0 blanking of Youngstown State at University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium Wednesday afternoon. Junior left fielder Steve Brown and sophomore second baseman Drew Schmidt were perfect at the plate as both went 3-for-3 on the day. XU improves to 3-6 after the win while YSU falls to 1-7.

Xavier got the scoring started in the bottom of the third after Schmidt was walked and then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by junior center fielder Adam Pasono. Brown singled to center field to collect the first of his four RBIs on the day as Schmidt came across. XU went up by one, 1-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Musketeers' Schmidt singled to second base and then stole second to move into scoring position. Freshman third baseman John McCambridge singled to right field as Schmidt moved over to third. Brown again sent Schmidt in to touch home, this time with a single to left field.

XU put together a four-run sixth to break open the game. The Penguins went to their bullpen and after he walked two straight batters, YSU went back to the bullpen. With sophomore designated hitter Bobby Freking and junior shortstop Jordan Conley on base, junior catcher Billy O'Conner reached on a fielder's choice as Freking was put out at third. Schmidt singled to the shortstop and McCambridge's single scored both Conley and O'Conner. Brown's double to left field scored both remaining runners. Xavier ended the frame up six, 6-0.

The last run of the game came in the following inning as Freking homered over the center field fence, his first home run of the year, to put Xavier ahead, 7-0.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Danny Rosenbaum (1-2) got his first win of the year on the strength of a career-high 11 strikeouts while walking only one over seven innings of work.

For the Penguins, Corey Vukovic (0-1) was charged with the loss after striking out seven and walking one in five innings of work.

Up next for the Musketeers is another neutral site matchup with Youngstown State Thursday evening in Xenia, Ohio, at the Athletes in Action field. The game will begin directly following the Dayton/Youngstown State game scheduled for 2 p.m.
