Swim Teams Wrap up Competition at A-10 Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Xavier men's and women's swimming teams closed out the 2008 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship on high notes as the women record their highest finish ever in second place while the men's third place finish was the best since 2005-06. Freshman Kari Peglar was named the Women's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, the first such honor a Xavier swimmer has ever earned. During the 1650 Freestyle events held during the middle of the afternoon, junior Pat McGrath set a new men's school-record time of 15:45.49 which was good for a silver medal. He also set the new 1000 Free school record during the event with a time of 9:33.22. Peglar also set a new school record in the 1650 Free with a time of 17:05.10, shaving off nearly 12 seconds from her personal best and earning her a gold medal in the event. The previous record holder was freshman Lindsey Barton, who finished third overall in the event (17:20.75) as well. In the women's 200 Backstroke event, junior Mary Catherine Mahon posted another school-record time of 2:05.89 which was good for eighth place. For the men, sophomore Mickey Hafertepe also placed eighth (1:54.30). Sophomore Elaina Suba placed fifth (52.15) and freshman Bethanie Griffin placed sixth (52.65) in the 100 Freestyle event. Sophomore Martha Cutter-Wilson picked up a fifth place finish (2:20.99) in the 200 Breaststroke event as well. For the men's 200 Breast, sophomore Mark Febus touched seventh (2:07.05).
The third school record that was set on the day came in the women's 200 Butterfly event as junior Alissa Schriner posted a new school-best mark of 2:06.72, earning her sixth place. For the men, freshman John Roof placed fifth (1:53.59) and senior Nico Lilly placed sixth (1:56.23). In the last two events of the night, the Musketeers again turned it up as the women's 400 Freestyle Relay team set a new school mark. Suba, Griffin, sophomore Alison Johnson and Peglar put together a time of 3:29.39, which secured the women's team's second place finish overall. For the men, senior Matt Krouse led off followed by freshman Terence Mahon, junior Jake Burke and freshman Nathan Green to post a time of 3:06.81, securing the men's third place finish.
