Records Continue to Fall at Swimming A-10 Championship

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Xavier men's and women's swimming teams have placed 21 swimmers in Friday night's finals consolation and championship heats at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship at the Flickinger Athletics Center. The women's team set three more school records during Friday's prelims with the finals scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. In the first event of the morning, sophomore Martha Cutter-Wilson turned in a school-record time of 4:27.52 in the 400 IM and she will be seeded second in tonight's championship heat. Sophomore Kelsey Burns will be joining Cutter-Wilson as the fifth seed after she tied the previous school record in the event with a time of 4:33.04. Junior Bridget Benner will swim in the consolation heat with the 12th seed. In the men's 400 IM, junior Jake Burke had the sixth highest time (4:07.73) of the morning and will swim in the championship finals. Sophomore Elaina Suba set the second school record of the day with a 57.27 time in the 100 Butterfly event, the second-best time of the morning. Also making the finals in this event are freshman Bethanie Griffin, junior Alissa Schriner and junior Amber Thompson. On the men's side, freshman John Roof made the consolation finals with the 13th best time (52.35).
The third broken record came in the women's 200 Freestyle as freshman Kari Peglar swam a 1:52.47, which was good for the third seed in the championship finals. Sophomore Alison Johnson will be swimming in the consolation finals in this event as well. For the men's 200 Freestyle, Xavier will have freshman Nathan Green (1:40.75), who won the bronze in the 500 Free, and the 500 Free silver medalist junior Patrick McGrath (1:41.89) swimming in the championship finals. Cutter-Wilson also made the championship finals of the 100 Breaststroke event while junior Matt Marcus and sophomore Mark Febus will also be competing in the championship finals for the men in the same event. The women will have two in the consolation final of the 100 Backstroke while the men placed senior Matt Krouse and sophomore Mickey Hafertepe in the championship finals and two others in the consolation finals. Tonight's finals are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Flickinger Athletics Center on the campus of Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y. The entire meet is being streamed live through www.atlantic10.com which can be watched for a fee. |
