BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Xavier men's and women's swim teams wrapped up the first day of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship with four new school records at the Flickinger Center. All four relay teams made it onto the podium to collect their medals as the women's team sit in second place and the men are in fourth.

"This was the best first day we've ever had," commented head coach Steve Riegler. "Not only did we set four new school records but we shattered them. We've never had all four relays on the awards podium. I feel like we are generally off to a good start."

Sophomores Elaina Suba and Martha Cutter-Wilson teamed up with freshman Bethanie Griffin and junior Alissa Schriner to finish in second place in the 200 Medley Relay with a new school-record time of 1:44.96 to open the meet. The new time is 3.16 seconds better than the previous time.

In the 200 Medley Relay on the men's side, senior Matt Krouse and junior Matt Marcus paired up with freshmen John Roof and Terence Mahon to take second place. Their time of 1:32.26 was half a second better than XU's previous best set last year.

Suba also led off the 800 Freestyle Relay as freshman Kari Peglar, junior Mary Catherine Mahon and sophomore Alison Johnson joined her in a third-place finish with a time of 7:34.46. That time was an amazing 5.67 seconds better than the former record.

In the evening's last event, the team of junior Patrick McGrath, freshman Nathan Green, Krouse and sophomore Mickey Hafertepe touched second in the 800 Freestyle Relay. Their time of 6:44.91 bested the old mark by 3.95 seconds.

After the first day, the women are tied with Duquesne for second place (66) and trial first-place Richmond by 14 points. The men are fourth (68) but Xavier does not participate in diving events and those points are included in the scores. UMASS, who had two of the top three divers, is first (135) followed by St. Bonaventure (104) and Fordham (85).

The championships continue on Thursday with morning trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at the Flickinger Center at 9:15 a.m. Live streaming video can be found on www.atlantic10.org.
